Description

View of Connellsville, Fayette County, P. A., 1897 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This panoramic view of Connellsville, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1897. Connellsville was established in the 1850's and named for founder and settler Zachariah Connell. Connellsville’s early history along the Youghiogheny River was that of a coal mining and river raft building community catering to traveling emigrants eager to raft their way down river to Kentucky and Ohio.

Coal has been mined in the region since the early 1800's and Connellsville was the site of the first bee-hive coal oven in the area. Coal production became a huge industry in Connellsville as furnaces emerged throughout the region producing coal to be transported by flat bottom boats to factories in Pittsburgh fifty miles away.

Paper making and iron producing were also important Connellsville industries during the 1800's. Milestones used along the National Pike from Cumberland to Wheeling were all produced by Boyts, Porter & Company Yough Steam Pump Works foundry. The Connellsville company was well known for their manufactured mining pumps and ore-crushers. As railroads gained momentum in the transportation of coal, the Connellsville Machine & Car Company that had begun in 1863 as a small firm making railroad frogs and switches, enlarged to accommodate the maintenance of the many new railroad cars filling the area. With the main rail line’s poor condition, and with many of the cars hastily built by the local coal companies, the firm, now operated by McGrath, McCormick & Co., prospered greatly.

The map from 1897 includes labeled streets, bridges, buildings and railroad lines.
