Description

View of Gallitzin, Cambria County, P.A., 1901 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This aero-view print of Gallitzin, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1901. Gallitzin was incorporated as a borough in 1878 and named after Prince Demetrius Augustine Gallitzin, a catholic priest. Gallitzin prospered greatly with the Pennsylvania coal and coke fields of the late 1800's. It was served by the Pennsylvania Railroad who in the 1850s created tunnels through the Allegheny Mountains to expand services. In 1902 a new tunnel, the Gallitzin Tunnel was begun.
