Description

View of Greensburg, Westmoreland County, P.A., 1901 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This print of Greensburg, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1901. Greensburg was incorporated as a borough in 1799 and named after Revolutionary War hero General Nathanael Greene. The stone Westmoreland Bank Building was built in 1805. Two major fires hindered the towns growth. A fire in 1858 destroyed a good portion of the center of Greensburg and another in 1887 burned down the popular opera house and two adjacent buildings.

Greensburg was served by the Pennsylvania Railroad. The discovery of soft coal deposits nearby enabled the community to prosper greatly. The Hempfield Foundry was established in 1898 with J. Howard Patton as president. The company was a large employer in the area, producing bronze, brass and grey iron castings, and mining cars.

St. Josephs Academy was founded at Greensburg in 1883. The school in known as Seton Hill College today.
