Description

View of Harmony, Butler County, P.A., 1901 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This panoramic print of Harmony, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1901. Harmony was established in the early 1800s along Connoquenessing Creek when a group of Harmonists from Germany bought the land and settled. The communal society developed the land into a valuable agricultural asset. The land was also found to contain important deposits of iron ore, coal and limestone. The community, part of Jackson Township at the time, erected mills, tanneries and distilleries along the creek and its tributaries, and established the first school in the region. The Harmonists were replaced by the Mennonites, who continued to prosper in the area. The Wilson Salt Works was established in Harmony in 1816. Harmony was incorporated as a borough in 1838, and was served by the Pennsylvania & Western Railroad. The former Harmonist farms and buildings were purchased by the Knights of Pythias of Pennsylvania in 1903.

The map from 1901 includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad route.
