Description

View of Irwin, Westmoreland County, P.A., 1897 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This aero-view print of Irwin, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1897. Irwin was founded in the late 1700's along Brush Creek. The community, named after a well known family of settlers, maintained farms and pasture land. Mills began to grace the banks of the creek and its tributaries and harvesting of the thick white oak that grew throughout the region began. The Pennsylvania Railroad served the area beginning in the 1850's.

Irwin was laid out in 1853 and stood on what became to be known as the Pennsylvania Seam. The rich deposits of bituminous coal were discovered and several mines where opened by Thomas A. Scott and General William Larimer. The Westmoreland Coal Company was organized in 1854 becoming one of the area’s largest employers. The coal industry was a key factor to Irwin’s growth.

Irwin was incorporated in 1864. The town’s Methodist Episcopal Church building was rebuilt in 1880 and included a new grand scale pipe organ that was donated by Andrew Carnegie. A fifteen room school building was built in 1890.

The map includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad lines.
