Description

View of New Brighton, Beaver County, P.A., 1883 / drawn & published by C. L. Fussell, Philadelphia Publishing House.

This colorful panoramic print of New Brighton, Pennsylvania was drawn by Charles Lewis Fussell and published by Philadelphia Publishing House in 1883. New Brighton was established in the early 1800's on the banks of the Beaver River. The industrious farming community maintained several mills including the famous Quaker Mill. It also fared well with brick works and glassmakers.

The Standard Horse Nail Company was a fixture in nearby Fallston from 1872 until the works burned down in 1884 and the operation was moved to New Brighton. The Logan & Strobridge Iron Company began making iron novelties in 1874. The Sherwood Brothers Pottery began operations in 1879. The firm manufactured sewer pipes, sinks and other clay products. The Enterprise Pottery was founded in the year of this maps publishing by D. Osborne, F. H. Stuchfield and others.

Stephen Foster once lived in New Brighton at a house on the southwest corner of 10th St. and Seventh Avenue.
