This panoramic etching of Pottsville, Pennsylvania was drawn by John Rubens Smith from Sharp Mountain and respectfully dedicated to the enterprising citizens of the Coal Region in 1833. Pottsville was founded along the Schuylkill River in 1828. Coal was discovered in the area in the late 1700's and by 1833 Pottsville was at the heart of the valued ore���s production.
 
The illustration from 1833 includes Pottsville���s early streets and buildings.
