Description

View of Pottsville, Schuylkill County, P.A., 1889 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer, A. E. Downs, Lith.

This panoramic print of Pottsville, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler and James B. Moyer in 1889. Pottsville was founded along the Schuylkill River in 1828. Anthracite coal was discovered in the area in the late 1700's and in the early 1800's coal veins began to be opened up. Pottsville filled with speculators and miners and by the mid-1800's, with the addition of railroads, the population swelled to nearly 5,000. Pottsville became the seat of government for Schuylkill County in 1851. Pottsville was home to several textile mills in the 1800's, but its main focus was the mining of the coal fields and the transportation of the valued ore.

The map from 1889 includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad lines.
