Description

View of Punxsutawney (Lindsey), Jefferson County, P.A., 1895 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler.

This aero-view print of Punxsutawney (Lindsey), Pennsylvania was drawn and published by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler in 1895. Lindsey was an industrious mill town located at the confluence of Saw Mill Run and Mahoning Creek. The foundry known as Star Iron Works was built in 1840 along Saw Mill Run. The communitys economy revolved around the many saw mills in the area. The Lindsey Press was established in 1894. The press was moved to Punxsutawney in 1899 and re-titled Punxsutawney Republican". Lindsey and nearby borough Claysville were consolidated in 1907 and called Punxsutawney, an Indian phrase for Sandfly Town.
