This bird’s-eye view of Rochester, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1900. Rochester was established in the late 1700's at the mouth of Big Beaver Creek along the Ohio River. Rochester was the southern terminus of the Pennsylvania Canal. It prospered as a shipping trade town with the canal and then railroads when they were added. Rochester was incorporated as a borough in 1849.
In 1854, the Rochester Manufacturing Company was organized for the manufacture of iron and the casting of car wheels and other iron goods. A fire brick works was started in 1856 by the Pendleton brothers. The Rochester Tumbler Company was organized in 1872. This firm employed more than a thousand people, manufacturing pressed crystal and lead tumblers and goblets. In 1901 the factory was destroyed by fire, reemerging in 1902 as the H. C. Fry Glass Company. Other important glass makers of Rochester included the Rochester Point Bottle Works or Point Bottle Works, established in 1879, the Beaver Valley Glass Manufacturing Company, known as “Dinkey” Glass Works, established in 1882, the Rochester Cut Glass Company, formed in 1896, and the Keystone Tumbler Company, organized in 1897 and known as National Glass Company as of 1899.
Rochester’s population in 1900 was 4,688. The map from 1900 includes labeled streets, buildings, bridges and railroad routes. It features inset illustrations of the following:
