Description

View of Roscoe, Washington County, P.A., 1902 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This bird’s-eye view of Roscoe, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1902. Roscoe is a borough along the Monongahela River that was a popular boat building town surrounded by numerous coal mines in the 1800's. The town was first known as Lucyville, but when incorporated in 1892, it was given the name Roscoe by popular vote. The Monongahela was navigable year round at this point which enabled Roscoe to prosper as it was a center for supplies used in the mining industry. Roscoe was served by the Pennsylvania Railroad.

The three main hotels of Roscoe in 1902 were the brick Central Hotel, built in 1892 and added onto in 1902, the 40 room Roscoe Hotel, and the first-class Haley House at Railroad and Wayne Streets. The Roscoe National Bank opened for business in 1900.
