Description

New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Ohio and Canada, with parts of adjoining states.

After the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860, South Carolina seceded from the United States, and within a month of the election, had become a one of the founding members of the Confederate States of America. An article in the Charleston Mercury stated: "The tea has been thrown overboard, the revolution of 1860 has been initiated."

Two and one-half months later, the other southern states left the Union.

This map of the northeast portion of the United States is shown one year before the beginning of the American Civil War.

The Rogers Locomotive Works was established in Paterson, New Jersey in 1832. Original founder Thomas Rogers' son Jacob S. headed the firm in the 1850's when it built its most famous locomotive called "The General". This product was a valuable article during wartime years. Rogers Locomotive Works produced over six thousand steam locomotives for various uses world-wide during its time.

This map was published in 1860 by G. Woolworth Colton. It shows state, county, and township boundaries. Railroads are clearly labeled with mileage noted between stations.

Inset maps include New York Harbor area and Philadelphia area.
