Description

View of Scranton, Lackawanna County, P.A., 1890 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This panoramic print of Scranton, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1890. Scranton emerged along the Lackawanna River as anthracite coal was discovered throughout the valley. In the 1830's Selden T. and George W. Scranton turned their attention here from agricultural interests to the manufacture of iron. Their method of smelting iron ore using the accessible coal produced in the region was found to be quite successful. In 1840 the Scranton brothers established the Lackawanna Steel Company and began producing rail for the growing transportation system. The family then formed the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad for the transport of coal from all sections of the coal fields.

Scranton was incorporated as a borough in 1856; earning city status ten years later. In 1878, when Lackawanna County was formed, Scranton became its seat of government. Scranton was called The Electric City when in 1886 the community began to be served by an electric trolley system. By 1890 Scranton was an important iron and steel manufacturing city with numerous subterranean coal operations.

The illustrated map from 1890 includes labeled streets, buildings, collieries, bridges and railroad lines.
