This panoramic print of St. Mary���s, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1895. St. Mary���s was established in the 1840's. Primarily an agricultural region, the newly formed township gained momentum with the discovery of rich deposits of coal, shale, sandstone, limestone and clay in the vicinity.

Brewing was an early interest of St. Mary���s as the town���s first brewery was founded in 1845 by Michael Hantz. Joseph Windfelder erected a brewery in 1851. That brewery was later owned by Charles and Henry Luhr. Peter Straub moved his operations to St. Mary���s in the 1850, purchased the Benzinger Springs Brewery and began the Straub Brewery. This popular brewery still exists today.

A brick yard was established in St. Mary���s in 1873. St. Mary���s tanneries were also boosts to the local economy producing shoe-sole leather. The St. Benedict���s Academy was formed in 1853 and the stone-made St. Joseph Convent building was completed in 1860.
