This aero-view print of Somerset, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1900. Somerset has been the seat of government for Somerset County since the county was formed in 1795.
The Somerset Academy building was opened to students in 1813. Somersets primary interests were in agricultural endeavors especially with dairy products. It also attracted tradesmen and mechanics and by the 1820's Somerset housed tanners, coopers, furniture makers, hatters and distillers.
Most of Somerset was consumed by fire in 1833. A major fire in 1872, which began at a foundry, destroyed much of the center of town and another in 1876, which started near the same location, leveled most of the rebuilt structures from the first fire.
Somerset was served by the Somerset & Cambria and South Pennsylvania railroads and in the late 1800's was a desirable summer resort.
