Description

View of Tionesta, Forest County, P.A., 1896 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This panoramic print of Tionesta, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1896. Tionesta was established along the Allegheny River in 1805. Mills were established in the early years and when coal and natural gas were discovered in the regions to the north, Tionesta benefited from its close proximity.

There was a popular natural spring located on Dutch Hill overlooking the town and a mysterious pit nearby on Tylersburg Road that emanated warm air which kept the ground around it green and lush all year round.

In 1923 the hills northeast of Tionesta were designated as a national forest. Efforts to bring the forests back from Pennsylvania’s coal era continue.

The map from 1896 includes labeled streets, bridges, buildings and railroad route.
