Description

View of Waynesburg, Greene County, P.A., 1897 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This panoramic print of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1897. Waynesburg was established along Ten Mile Creek in that late 1700's and named after Revolutionary War hero General Mad Anthony Wayne.

In the years of Pennsylvanias coal and coke era Waynesburg was found to be surrounded by rich beds of coal and coke as well as oil and natural gas.

Waynesburg College was organized in 1849 by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Citizens of Waynesburg subscribed $5000.00 for the building of the school offering study in liberal arts. When completed in 1851, the colleges building at College and Washington streets was a handsome three-story brick structure that was the pride of the community.

Waynesburgs non-partisan newspaper, The Independent, was first circulated to an already established 1,100 subscribers in 1872. The firms early proprietors, Z. C. Ragan and J. W. Axtell, added the use of Greene Countys first steam powered printing press in 1875. The newspapers firm stance against current liquor trafficking and other negative interests in the 1880's was the suspected cause of the business being destroyed by fire in 1884. The newspaper was later able to re-establish itself.

The map from 1897 includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad routes.
