Description

View of Wrightsville, York County, P.A., 1894 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This aero-view print of Wrightsville, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1894. Wrightsville was first settled by Europeans in 1811 at a graceful bend of the Susquehanna River.

A covered bridge at Wrightsville reaching Lancaster County became a valuable asset to the community when it was completed in 1814. The bridge was rebuilt in 1832 after it was destroyed by an ice flood. This replacement bridge served as a transportation necessity until being burned during the civil war. At the time, Wrightsville citizens just watched as the sacrificial bridge burned, preventing the Confederates from crossing over from Lancaster County.

Wrightsvilles foundation was in small manufacturing and agriculture, especially the growing and processing of fine tobacco. There were also notable lime quarries.

Wrightsville was at the northern end of the Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal system. Portions of the canal are still visible near the river today.

The map from 1894 includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad route.
