Description

View of Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, P.A., 1876 / drawn & published by John P. Hunt & Co.

This birds-eye view of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was drawn and published by John P. Hunt & Co. in 1876. Philadelphia was founded in 1682 at the confluence of the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers.

This seat of government for Philadelphia County acted as the national capital during Revolutionary times. Philadelphia prospered with its river port location becoming a major trade and industrial center.

In 1876, Philadelphia welcomed the nations first worlds fair, the Centennial Exposition, to town. Located at Fairmount Park, the fair drew in over 10 million visitors to the Philadelphia area during its six month run.

The fair celebrated the nations past, present and future, and featured such displays as the John Bull Locomotive, the Corliss Steam Engine, Singers sewing machine, Remingtons typewriter and Alexander Graham Bells telephone. The centennial gave way to much progress and building in Philadelphia.
