Description

View of Zelienople, Butler County, P.A., 1901 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This panoramic print of Zelienople, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1901. Zelienople was established along Connoquenessing Creek in the early 1800's by landowner Detmar Basse of Germany.

Basse had been an important ambassador to Paris during the Napoleonic wars. His planned town was named after his daughter Zelie and he quickly erected a grist mill and built a grand old German style castle on the bluff overlooking Zelienople and the valley.

The three-story castle, known as Bassenheim, was complete with battlements, turrets, and a tower. The palatial castle was destroyed by fire in 1842.

Railroads that reached Zelienople in the 1870's enabled much growth through transportation of the community’s valued farm produce and manufactured wares.

The map from 1901 includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad lines. It features an inset illustration of Wm. Kavanaugh & Co. Manufacturers of Superior Grades of Drilling and Fishing Tools.
