Agriculture was of major economic importance in Mississippi in the late 1800's. The Illinois Central Railroad began expanding its lines into Mississippi during that time, connecting the state's agricultural centers with New Orleans, Louisville and other larger marketing centers.
The Mississippi Valley Railroad was incorporated in 1882 as a subsidiary of the Illinois Central Railroad. The line operated 1,280 miles of standard gauge tracks along the west side of the Mississippi River between the Mississippi Delta and Jackson, Mississippi from 1882 until 1892.
In 1892 the company purchased the Louisville, New Orleans & Texas Railway.
