Description

Chippewa-Falls, Wisonsin [sic] county-seat of Chippewa County 1907. H. W., sk.

Historic map of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, published by H. Wellge in 1906, reprint. Jean Brunet built the first dam in Chippewa Falls in 1836. French explorer Pierre-Charles Le Sueur first discovered the Chippewa Spring near the river around 1700. The name "Chippewa" comes from a pronunciation of the name of the Native American tribe "Ojibwa".

While logging was still leading the economy of the town in 1906, with rail lines connecting Chippewa Falls with the major shipping destinations, the map shows other industries emerging. The first railroad to arrive in the region, the West Wisconsin Railway, established a line from St. Paul, Minnesota to Milwaukee, passing about 10 miles south of Chippewa Falls, with a depot in Eau Claire. In the 1870's, the Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls Railway installed a line from Eau Clair to Chippewa Falls. The Wisconsin and Minnesota Railway then joined the Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls Railway in 1880, going westward. In 1881, the Chippewa Falls & Northern Railroad, built a line north that extended to Superior.
