Description

Bird's eye view of Columbus, Columbia Co., Wisconsin 1868. Drawn by A. Ruger.

Bird's-eye view map of Columbus, Wisconsin, drawn by Albert Ruger and published by Chicago Lithographing Co. in 1868, reprint. Located in Columbia County and named for Christopher Columbus, Columbus was part of the wilderness of Wisconsin until settlers arrived in the 1840's. According to an article published in the "Columbus Democrat" newspaper, titled "Columbus Pioneer", written in 1908, the Dickenson and Taylor families were the only settlers in the area when Harvey McCafferty, the article's subject, arrived in 1843 as a young man.

This map captures the town as it appeared in 1868. Henry Kurth opened his first brewery, the Kurth Brewery, in Columbus in 1859, followed by another in the mid 1860's.
