Description

Fond du Lac, Wisconsin 1867. Drawn by A. Ruger.

Beautiful historic map of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, drawn by Albert Ruger and published by Chicago Lithographing Co. in 1867, reprint. Fond Du Lac shares a history with other towns in the Northwest Territories that were created when the French ceded control of the region following the Treaty of 1783. The area is known to have been inhabited by Native Americans as far back as 1,000 BC. Winnebago tribal villages were present in the area that is now Fond du Lac County when the first American settlers began arriving in the 1830's. In September 1832, the Winnebago tribe signed over their remaining lands to the United States.

The federal government acted quickly to have the newly ceded lands surveyed and most of the surveying of southeastern Wisconsin was completed by the end of 1833. An Act of Congress approved on June 26, 1834, created two new land districts, allowing most of southeastern Wisconsin to become available to settlers and land speculators. The surveyed land was to be sold in 1835. Lands not sold in this original sale, which included all of Fond du Lac County, were then offered for sale at the price of $1.25 per acre.
