Description

Fairmont and Palatine, West Virginia 1897. Drawn by T. M. Fowler.

The detailed reproduction map of Fairmont and Palatine, West Virginia was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1897. Fairmont is county seat to Marion County. It was established in 1820 as Middletown when the county was known as Monogalia County, after the river on which it is located. Just across the river, the map shows the community of Palatine, which is now considered part of Fairmont. The surrounding fertile fields were found to be ideal for growing wheat, corn, oats, rye, flax and all kinds of vegetables and grasslands perfect for the grazing of livestock.

Fairmont State University was founded in 1865 in the basement of the Methodist Protestant Church on Fairmonts Quincy Street. The school was developed as an institution for teachers, and at the time of this maps publishing, was known as State Normal School. Around 1870, several coal mines opened in the area including the West Fairmont, the American, the New York, the Marion and the Central Mines. These mines employed hundreds and Fairmont and Palatine prospered with the industry.

The map of Fairmont and Palatine from 1897 includes clearly labeled streets, bridge, buildings and railroad lines.
