Description

Morgantown, West Virginia 1897. Drawn by T. M. Fowler.

This reproduction panoramic map of Morgantown, West Virginia was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1897.

In 1814, the Monongalia Academy was founded in Morgantown. In 1858, the Woodburn Female Seminary was opened nearby. The West Virginia University was established in Morgantown in 1867 as the “Agricultural College of West Virginia”. The next year the college’s name was altered to West Virginia University. The college’s campus was built on the grounds of the former academies. As the college opened, the local Morgantown Weekly Post noted: “a place more eligible for the quiet and successful pursuit of science and literature is nowhere to be found.”

An extension of the B. & O. Railroad from Fairmont to Morgantown was completed in 1886. Four smaller railways from the main terminal were soon added. These lines extended to outlying coal fields, which, at the time, employed a great number of people.

The 1897 map of Morgantown includes clearly labeled streets, bridges, buildings and railroad lines.
