The reproduction view of St. Mary��s, West Virginia was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1899. St. Mary��s was established in the mid-1800's by Alexander Creel, who while sailing by on the Ohio River, had a vision of the Virgin Mary.

Hiram A. Carpenter was a nineteen-year old enterpriser from the area in 1899. He started his prosperous sand and gravel business here and eventually owned several islands near St. Marys, which he farmed. His major contribution to St. Marys was the addition in 1928 of the Hi Carpenter Memorial Bridge which connected the town with Newport, Ohio.

The map from 1899 includes St. Mary��s labeled streets, buildings, shipping traffic and railroad line.
