Description

View of Atchison, Atchison County, K.S., 1869 / drawn & published by A. Ruger.

This bird’s-eye view print of Atchison, Kansas was drawn and published by Albert Ruger, Merchants Lith. in 1869. The riverboat town of Atchison was settled off a small tributary valley of the Missouri River in the 1850's.

An agricultural center in its early years, Atchison became a popular outfitting town during the 1860's. The westward railroad, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe, began operations in 1863. Atchison could be reached, at the time, via the railroad from St. Joseph, Missouri. Atchison was the natural place for westbound travelers to supply and outfit themselves before continuing west.

In the years following the American Civil War, Atchison gained new prosperity with the addition of numerous industrial interests.

The illustration shows labeled roads, buildings, waterways and railroad routes. Inset illustrations feature the Court House and the Public School. The steamer H. S. Turner is shown on the river.
