Historic Map - Baxter Springs, KS - 1871
Description
View of Baxter Springs, Cherokee County, K.S., 1871 / drawn & published by E. S. Glover.
This bird’s-eye view print of Atchison, Kansas was drawn and published by Eli Sheldon Glover, Union Lith. in 1871. Baxter Springs emerged as a cattle town in the years following the American Civil War. Fort Baxter, at that location, had been fortified during the war and was the site of a noteworthy assault on Union forces by Quantrill’s Raiders.
After the war Baxter Springs grew into a major cow town as the demand for beef increased in the north. Stockyards were created and Texas cattle began to be driven in and stored until loaded onto railroad cars of the new rail system for shipment north.
Baxter Springs was a rough and tumble gathering place for cowboys, full of rowdy saloons and old west hotels in the days before railroads were extended to Texas.
The illustration shows labeled roads, buildings, waterways and railroad route.
