Description

View of Nantucket, Nantucket County, M.A., 1881 / drawn & published by J. J. Stoner.

This bird’s-eye view print of the town of Nantucket, Massachusetts was drawn and published by J. J. Stoner, Beck & Pauli, Lith. in 1881. The island town of Nantucket was settled in the 1600's. In its early days, whales were hunted and harvested on the wharves and Nantucket catered to the seamen who gathered there.

In the late 1800's, with the whaling industry ended, New Englanders were beginning to gain interest in the island’s scenery and fine beaches.

The illustration, looking southwest, includes port activities, buildings, roads and beaches. There are detailed illustrations of the following:

• Siaconset.
• Sankaty Head Light House.
• Ocean House.
