Description

View of Quincy, Norfolk County, M.A., 1878 / drawn & published by E. Whitefield.

This richly colored panoramic print of Quincy, Massachusetts was drawn and published by Edwin Whitefield in 1878. Quincy was settled in the early 1600's southeast of Boston along the Neponset River. Quincy was originally part of Dorchester, and then part of Boston, until its reorganization as Braintree in the mid-1600's. In 1792, the bustling shipbuilding community was incorporated as Quincy, after Colonel John Quincy.

In the 1800's, Quincy was known for its valuable granite quarries. A special railway was built to transport granite from the quarries to the river for exportation.

Quincy was also known for its fine educational institutions. The Quincy Method of learning was introduced in the 1870's by Francis W. Parker to enhance educational learning. His hands-on method of training was well-received, and Mr. Parker was later brought to Chicago to better its educational system.

The illustration shows Quincy’s labeled roads, buildings and waterways.
