This bird’s-eye view print of Ironwood, Michigan was drawn and published by Henry Wellge, Beck & Pauli Lith. Co. in 1886. Ironwood was a new town in 1886, serving the numerous iron ore mines that were established throughout this upper peninsula region. A branch off the main line of the Milwaukee Lake Shore & Western Railroad, at this point, directly reached profitable mines such as the Ironwood Mine, the Aurora Mine, the Pabst Mine and the Norrie Mines.
Ironwood also maintained a valuable timber industry at the time. Ontonagon County’s boundaries were re-established in 1887 creating Gogebic County. That same year most of Ironwood’s business core buildings, pictured in this map, were destroyed by fire.
