This panoramic print of St. Johns, Michigan was drawn and published by Albert Ruger, Chicago Lith. in 1868. The incorporated village of St. Johns is the county seat of Clinton County. It is situated within the boundaries of Bingham Township.

The village sits atop an elevated hill, and was considered one of the handsomest villages in central Michigan during the late 1800's. The Detroit & Milwaukee Railroad reached St. Johns in the 1850's, enhancing the areas healthy lumber industry and adding much growth to the community.

At that time, Clinton Avenue was thick with tree stumps, and nightly stump-fires lit up the evening skies along the road to combat the abundance of mosquitoes in the area.

The St. Johns Manufacturing Company began operations in the building of furniture in 1857. That same year Archelaus Silsbee opened a foundry and began manufacturing agricultural implements. The establishment, known as the St. Johns Foundry, was well known for its popular “Victor Mower”.
