The Grand Trunk Railroad was built in the 1850's to serve the cities of Quebec and Ontario and connect them with Portland, Maine at the eastern end, and the larger cities of Illinois in the west.
The Toledo, Ann Arbor & Grand Trunk Railway operated between 1880 and 1884 before its reorganization as the Toledo, Ann Arbor & North Michigan Railway. In 1905 that railroad was acquired by the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton Railway.
Toledo was a prominent center for several railroad companies in the 1880's. A plant at Ironton which transformed iron ore into pig-iron operated from 1881 until its closure in 1893.
