Description

View of Farmington, Strafford County, N.H., 1877.

This bird’s-eye view print of Farmington, New Hampshire was drawn and published in 1877. Farmington was settled in the 1700's where the Mad and the Ela rivers meet the larger Cochecho River.

Farming and timber harvesting were early interests in Farmington until the mid-1800's, when shoe and boot manufacturers began building factories along the rivers. During and after the American Civil War, Farmington shoe manufacturers thrived, bringing the industry to new heights through the use of automated shoemaking equipment. Farmington was known as the “Shoe Capital of New Hampshire” in that era.

The community could be reached via the Boston & Maine Railroad.
