Description

View of Henniker, Merrimack County, N.H., 1889 / drawn & published by Geo. E. Norris.

This hand-colored bird’s-eye view print of Henniker, New Hampshire was drawn and published by George E. Norris, Burleigh Lith. in 1889. Henniker was settled along the Contoocook River in the 1750's and named for British shipping merchant John Henniker, Esq. The area’s ponds and streams watered fertile farms and orchards in the surrounding hills and tall course grass in the lower meadows that supported stock grazing.

Henniker Academy was built by voluntary subscription in 1836 and modernized in 1884.

The steady river powered mills and factories in the 1800's. The Contoocook Valley Paper Company acquired the water-power at West Henniker in 1871. The company erected a new large mill and dam at that location for its popular book paper manufactory. John Gutterson operated grist and flouring mills. Courser & Son maintained a large grain mill and also manufactured cider, clapboards and shingles. Gage & Company had a mill near Long Pond that manufactured dry measures, nest boxes, piggins and covers.

The map includes labeled roads, buildings, waterways and railroad route. Featured are inset illustrations of West Henniker, Gage’s Mill and South of R. R. Bridge.
