Description

View of Lake Village, Belknap County, N.H., 1883 / drawn & published by Poole & Norris.

This panoramic print of Lake Village, New Hampshire was drawn and published by Poole & Norris, Beck & Pauli Lith. in 1883. Lake Village is a resort village north of Laconia astride a short channel between Opechee and Paugus bays. The short waterway, connecting Lake Winnisquam with the regions of Lake Winnipesaukee, maintains a dam which, in the 1800's, powered the mills and manufactories that emerged around it.

The Laconia and Lake Village Water Works Company was organized in 1883. The company held the water-power rights at this point.

Lake Village is located 1.5 miles from Laconia. In 1883, a horse-drawn railroad operated between the Willard Hotel, in Laconia, to the steam-boat landing at Lake Village. The popular steamer “Lady of the Lake” took regular excursions from Lake Village to Weirs, Centre Harbor and other sites.

Lake Village was a summer resort village containing a number of luxury hotels in the late 1800's. The town held railroad shops of the Boston, Concord & Montreal railway. Lake Village is now referred to as Lakeport.

The map includes labeled roads, buildings, waterways and railroad route.
