This panoramic print of Milford, New Hampshire was drawn and published by Lucien R. Burleigh, C. H. Vogt Lith. in 1886. Milford was settled in the early 1700's as part of Amherst. The village was incorporated as a separate town in 1794. Its location along the Souhegan River enabled textile mills to prosper in the 1800's.
Granite was quarried at numerous locations near Milford making it a significant granite transportation center. With the help of the Wilton Railroad and later, a branch of the Fitchburg Railroad, granite was profitably shipped to other locations. It is said that granite quarried at Milford was used for the pillars of the United States Treasury building in Washington DC. The quarries at Burns Hill produced nearly a thousand tons of granite monthly, while quarries to the southeast of town produced fine-grain monumental stone of white, pink, and two shades of blue. The monumental stone was used for large monuments, memorials and mausoleums. The cemetery at Albany, NY contains a fine 16 foot monument made of granite quarried here.
