Description

View of Milton, Strafford County, N.H., 1888 / drawn & published by Geo. E. Norris.

This hand-colored bird’s-eye view print of Milton, New Hampshire was drawn and published by George E. Norris, Burleigh Lith. in 1888. Milton was settled in the 1760's along the Salmon Falls River in the Three Ponds area of eastern New Hampshire. Farming and stock-raising maintained the early community here.

In the 1800's, Milton was a manufacturing town utilizing the river’s water-power to operated mills and manufactories. The Milton Mills Manufacturing Company was organized in the 1830's. The woolen mill produced cloth and blankets. A block printing business, begun in 1850 by Edward Brierly, expanded some years later to incorporate the manufacture of felt. Brierly’s mills soon covered both sides of the river, but upon being burned to the ground in 1873, were rebuilt more modestly. That same year, Henry H. Townsend & Co. erected a felt goods mill at Milton and in 1880 the firm added a larger mill which produced thread goods.

Milton’s nearby ponds are a trio of lovely ponds arranged around Teneriffe Mountain that afford excellent fishing and outstanding scenery.

The colorful map includes labeled roads, buildings, waterways and railroad route. It features an inset illustration of a pond fishing scenario.
