Description

View of Peterborough, Hillsborough County, N.H., 1886 / drawn & published by L. R. Burleigh.

This panoramic print of Peterborough, New Hampshire was drawn and published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1886. Peterborough was settled in the 1740's along the Contoocook River.

The Contoocook and Nubanusit Brook offered ample water-power for the numerous mills and manufactories that were established along them in the 1800's. Woolen factories were prominent throughout town as well as supporting industries.

Peterborough contained a fine granite quarry and monumental works, and a popular portable patent piano stool manufactory.

The map includes labeled roads, buildings, waterways and railroad routes. Featured are inset illustrations of South Peterboro, West Peterboro and points of interest.
