Description

View of South Newmarket, Rockingham County, N.H., 1884 / drawn & published by Norris & Wellge.

This bird’s-eye view print of South Newmarket, New Hampshire was drawn and published by Norris & Wellge in 1884. South Newmarket was settled just southwest of Portsmouth on the west Bank of the Squamscot River. It had been the site of several battles during the Indian Wars and Queen Anne War.

South Newmarket has been known as Newfields since 1895. The community had good access in the early days with the Squamscot and Lamprey rivers, and in 1700, a ferry crossing the Squamscot was established at this location. The connecting roads to neighboring villages were nothing more than narrow bridal paths at first. A series of improvements of the paths was then carried out, in the 1700's, leaving adequately laid out roads and turnpikes with unpopular heavy tolls.

South Newmarket was reached by a branch of the Boston & Maine Railroad in 1841. South Newmarket was a busy town in the 1800's containing numerous industries such as the Newmarket Cotton Manufacturing Company, Haines’ Cotton Batting Mill and Hall’s Nut and Bolt Works, all of which were located at the lower falls of the Piscassic. Foundries at South Newmarket manufactured engines and boilers, especially for use in the lumber trade.
