Description

View of Whitefield, Coos County, N.H., 1883 / drawn & published by A. F. Poole.

This bird’s-eye view print of Whitefield, New Hampshire was drawn and published by A. F. Poole, Beck & Pauli Lith. in 1883. Whitefield was incorporated on the northern edge of the White Mountains in 1804.

The lumber town gained popularity in the mid-1800's as a mountain resort destination. The picturesque scenery and healthy air lured many New Englanders to this location to enjoy the various luxury resort spas that were established here.

The White Mountain View House, operated by W. F. Dodge & Son, began accommodating visitors in 1866. The grand resort was situated on an elevated plateau, just two miles from the railroad station. The ornate hotel was at the center of a panoramic viewpoint of both lake and mountain scenery. Extensive views of the White and Franconia Mountain ranges, and the Green Mountains of Vermont were clear and uncompromised at this point. In the early 1880's, the hotel underwent renovations and enlarged to accommodate 100 guests in the summer seasons. Today it operates under the name Mountain View Grand Resort and Spa.

The view includes labeled roads, buildings, bridges, waterways and railroad route.
