The Long Island Railroad was established in 1834 to provide daily commuter service between Boston and New York. In 1849 the line began concentrating on Long Island community services. At that time other routes built from New York through Connecticut over to Boston nearly made the Long Island Railroad obsolete.
In 1874 the Long Island Railroad merged with a number of smaller Long Island lines to become a more efficient commuter network. The railroad became a lifeline to new and old communities of Long Island, providing transportation and services.
New York State’s advancements in transportation were significant in the late-1800's. On Long Island several small railroads began to connect the island communities east of Jamaica, beginning in the early 1860's.
This map was published in 1895 by the American Bank Note Company. It shows principal place names, railroad stations, waterways, counties, and the railroad system of 1895.
