Colton's New Mexico and Arizona.

In 1853, Arizona was designated as part of the Territory of New Mexico as that territory was purchased from Mexico.

During the American Civil War Arizona was claimed by Jefferson Davis to support the Confederacy, while the New Mexico Territory at the east was claimed by the Union. This division drawn at that time defined the two states and both were granted statehood in 1912.

This relief map of New Mexico and Arizona was published in 1873 by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. It shows railway routes, rivers, mountains, major destinations, stations, towns, forts, and land grants.
