Map of California to accompany
printed agreement of S. O. Houghton as to the rights of the Southern
Pacific R.R. Co. of Cal. to government lands under Acts of Congress
passed July 27, 1866 and March 3, 1871 made before the committee of the
judiciary of the Senate and Ho. of Reps. in May 1876. In 1876 the San Fernando Railroad Tunnel was completed through the Tehachapi Mountains, providing regular trips between Los Angeles and Northern California via a branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad, which linked with the Central Pacific Railway. This new route included the Tehachapi Loop, which spiraled up the mountains at an easy 2% gauge. The loop connected the Mojave Desert to the San Joaquin Valley. Early railroad passengers were treated to spectacular scenery as the train made its way up the mountain. The loop is still in operation today, and is considered an engineering marvel of its time. This detailed relief map was published in 1876 by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. It shows cities and towns, waterways, land grants, and railroad routes; both existing and proposed. This detailed map of the California Railroad system was originally published in 1876. |
