Reproduction bird's-eye view map of New York City and vicinity, created
for Jacob Ruppert's Knickerbocker Beer in 1912. Jacob Ruppert
was born in New York City in 1842 to Bavarian immigrants. His father
owned a brewery in Manhattan where Jacob learned the business. In 1862,
Jacob established the Jacob Ruppert Brewery and in the first year of
production he sold over 5,000 barrels of beer. The brewery became a
success with Mr. Ruppert's particular salesmanship. He reportedly joined
any German organization available and enjoyed singing with society
choirs; and though his voice was said to be off-pitch, he would blame it
on his large thirst. He would enable his fleet of salesmen to offer
bribes in the marketing of his beer. Jacob Ruppert's son, Jake emerged
as general manager of the company in 1890. By that time the plant was
producing over a half a million barrels a year and young Jake was
joining clubs just like his father. He became so popular that Governor
David Hill named him a "New York State Colonel". In the days before
income tax, Ruppert prospered greatly through product sales, affording
him several thoroughbred racing horses and expensive antiques. The year
after this map's publishing the brewery would expand with a bigger and
better plant that would have a 2 million barrel capacity. "Colonel Jake"
would purchase the New York Yankees that same year and would later hire
Babe Ruth to the team. The beer was highly featured at the team's
baseball stadium.
This map was published the same year that the
British luxury liner, the "Titanic" embarked on her fateful maiden
voyage, bound for New York City. The ship sank on April 14, 1912. Among
the 1500 people that were lost at sea were notable New Yorkers Ben
Guggenheim, Isidor and Ida Straus and Colonel John Jacob Astor.
"Alexander's Ragtime Band" was formed in 1912, performing the music of
New York songwriter Israel Baline, more famously known as Irving Berlin.
New York City theaters were also desegregated this year.
This
beautifully colored panoramic map from 1912 shows waterways with
shipping traffic, boroughs and clearly labeled railroad routes. |
