The city of greater New York / Charles Hart.

New York City was first settled by the English in 1664, and grew quickly due to the trading ports and influx of arrivals from Europe. After the Revolutionary War, the city served as the first capital of the United States. Federal Hall on Wall Street hosted the first assembly of the United States Supreme Court and the United States Congress, as well as the ratification of the Constitution, and the drafting of the United States Bill of Rights. By the late 1700's the city surpassed Philadelphia and became the largest city in the country, which it has remained to this day. This beautiful map provides a look at the early days of the city.
