Description

View of Brainerd, Crow Wing County, M.N., 1914 / drawn & published by Arthur G. McCoy.

This early print of Brainerd, Minnesota was drawn by Arthur G. McCoy and published by Duluth Photo-Engraving Co. in 1914. Brainerd was founded along the Mississippi River in the 1870's as a railroad junction was planned at that location and a bridge crossing the river was built nearby. The Northern Pacific Railway maintained railroad machine and car shops in town.

Saw mills were established at the river’s edge and the timber industry began to be of major economic importance for Brainerd in the late 1800's. The surrounding forests of white pine were harvested aggressively during that era.

In the early 1900's, Brainerd entered into its valuable mining days, as iron ore began to be mined throughout the region. This brought much growth in Brainerd and prompted the neighboring communities of Crosby and Irontown to form.

The map, showing the “City of Mines”, includes labeled roads, bridges, buildings, mines, proven mining grounds, lakes, railroad lines and vicinity.
