View of Chicago, Cook County, I.L., 1874 / drawn by Currier & Ives.

This illustrated print of Chicago, Illinois was published in Harper’s Weekly in 1874 from an illustration drawn by Currier & Ives. The bird’s-eye view shows the burnt district of the Great Fire of 1871 and was featured on pages 636-7 in the August 1, 1874 issue of the above mentioned magazine.

The fire, nearly three years earlier, was spread by heavy winds aided by dry conditions which enabled embers to drift from building to building very quickly. The conflagration killed nearly 300 and destroyed much of the core of the city.

Many considered the city to be un-inhabitable during these years of re-construction and re-located to nearby towns. Chicago was quick to rebuild following the disaster.

The map from 1874 includes streets, bridges, buildings and railroad routes. It portrays port activity and features border references to the following:
