View of St. Peter, Nicollet County, M.N., 1870 / drawn & published by A. Ruger.

This bird’s-eye view print of St. Peter, Minnesota was drawn by Albert Ruger and published by Ruger and Stoner, Merchants Lith. Co. in 1870. St. Peter was established in the 1850's along the St. Peter (Minnesota) River. Citizens of St. Peter made an unsuccessful bid to have the territorial capital moved from St. Paul to St. Peter in the late 1850's as Minnesota’s statehood was being organized.

A state-operated insane asylum was established at St. Peter in 1866. The town was served by the St. Paul & Sioux City Railway in 1870, which stopped just across the river.

The first swing-bridge, pictured, was completed in 1871 with connecting rail into St. Peter. The timber bridge was replaced with an iron one in 1879.

The map includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad route. There is a featured inset illustration of the State Asylum for the Insane.
